Values is the most commanly used as a substitute for the words "Virtue" and "Morlaity". But Values not only mean virtues. They are distinct from facts, when we say "Sun rises in East" we are making a factual statement but when we express it as "Sun looks so beautiful when its raining" we are making a value judgment. Values often lead beyong the world of fcts and point to goals beyonf our senses. If we explain the TERM value Economically..........oops now whats that...
In economics it is used to mean (a) the capacity of an object to staisfy a human need or desire (b) money( value in exchange).
Men is a hierarchy of needs which provides the motivation for his behaviour. The lower or basic needs satisfies his physical needs and needs higher to this constitute values and needs above our physical existence which is out Real Self..However, values are not just the higher "needs" or "desire". Tahre, they stand for what is desirable or valuable. Not all things that are desirable are valueable there are several things that are not desirable by people but are valuable. It is not just what an individual things desirable or valuable its the whole community or the whole humanity which makes it desirable or valuable. So we can say "values are certain social norms or standards".
Now lest combine all the three characteristics of Value. They are as said by Swami Bhanjananda "Values arethe Higher normative needs of humanity which individual experiences as inner moral or aesthetic imperative or Goal seeking". Then you will say what is "IDEAL"????? its nothing but values chossen as the goal of life by an individual.
Julian Huxley an eminent bilologist says " we find values not only emerging from evolutionary process but playing an active part in all phases we know as an immediate and abovious fact that there are higher and lower values we discover as a result of scientific analysis that there are more or less desirable and valuable directive in evolution.
Types of values which are necessary for the all round development of personality are Moral values, Social values, Aesthetic Values, Congitive values, Spiritual values. The Greek Culture from very ancient times regarded Truth, Goodness and Beauty as absolute values. Similary all Religions have ther own values ; Christianity posited Love of God as absolute value and Love for mankind as an instrumental Value. Indian Culture has Two-tier system of values know as Purusarthas. The Lower tier consist of three values: Kama(sensous pleasure), artha(wealth) and Dharma(morality). Hindu scripture clearly state that Kama and Artha should be governed by Dharma. This Trivarga of values is ment for Ordinary man. For those who want to lead a life away from Kama and Artha, hindu culture offers an upper tier which forms the Highest value( Parama Purusartha) namely Mukti OR Moksha, everlasting freedom.from sorrow.....There are hardly anyone who doesn not want to be free from sorrow. Mukti, however is not freedom from ordinary sorrow but from very possibility of being Reborn or earth Or to conquer death. Mukti is absolute Value
